ce Cave
In June of 1898, John A. Dalton went to Blackfoot and
filed on a homestead of one hundred sixty acres North and
just a little East of a knoll, which is now known as the
'Ice Cave knoll'.
They were delighted to find this ice cave and would send
their daughter, Elsie, who was their 'Go-fer-girl' for
perishable food items which they had stored in the cave.
John built the first ladder to be used in entering the area
referred to as the window, which was the storage area.
The window was located six hundred fifty feet East of the
main opening, now covered by the road.
The cave itself, is about three-eighths of a mile long
and was formed from the lava flow from the knoll to the
West of it.
Many area residents are still unaware of this cave's
existance, but was visited as part of a county centennial
tour on the 18th of August-1990.
