Pocatello's Name in WWII
Chief Pocatello's memory was
honored by giving his name to
two fighting vessels in World War II.
USS Pocatello
Tacoma-Class Frigate
Launched October 17, 1943. It was sponsored by Miss Thelma Dixey,
Chief Pocatello's great-granddaughter.
The USS Pocatello was commissioned on February 18, 1944, in
Richmond, California. In April, 1944, the vessel commenced weather station
operations out of Seattle, Washington, assigned to the Western Sea Frontier.
The USS Pocatello was decommissioned May 2, 1946 in Charleston,
South Carolina. She was awarded one battle star for her wartime service.
Pocatello Chief
B-24 Liberator
The Pocatello Chief was accepted by the U.S. Air Force in San Diego, California
on November 9, 1943. The bomber was delivered to the 8th Air Force in England
on December 27, 1943.
It was shot down on March 15, 1944 over Brunswick, Germany.
