Central Idaho Rockies:

A Region of Superlatives

You won’t find the biggest potato in this part of Idaho.
You will find the state’s highest peak, the biggest
wilderness in the lower 48 states, the oldest ski restor
in the US, arguably the most scenic whitewater
rafting anywhere, and the site of the nation’s strongest
earthquake (outside of Alaska) since 1959.

Middle Fork of the Salmon River
Northwest of Challis, rafters and kayakers navigate the rapids
of the Middle Fork for 98 miles through the Frank Church
River of No Return Wilderness. Along the way, they discover
hot springs, crystal waters, catch-and-release fishing and
wildlife watching far from roads. No wonder there’s a lottery
system now for permits to raft the river.

Sun Valley
Averill Harriman hit the mark when he chose Sun Valley
for the country’s first ski resort in 1936. Today, fresh
powder, sunshine and lavish facilities attract thousands
of skiiers for both downhill and nordic skiing. In summer,
tour the town’s galleries, shops and cafes or take in a
professional ice show. Take Hwy 75 south from Challis.

Craters of the Moon National Monument
Wildflower bouquets erupt from 2,000-year-old lava flows each
June. In winter, cross-country skiiers glide on groomed trails
cinder cones. In summer, rangers give tours of the ‘lunar’
landscape, where lizards bask in the sun-warmed lava rock.
The Monument also features a visitor center and campbround.
Follow Hwy 93southeast from Challis.
